Top 10 Packing Tips to Make Your Move Easier

When you are moving from home to home, one of the best ways to ensure a safe and productive move, is to pack your belongings properly. Here are the top 10 packing tips.

* Always try to use 50 pound boxes or less. Boxes larger than this are harder to pack because when they are full, they become to heavy and you run the risk of having the box rip or collapse.

* It is better to place more light items in a big box and fewer heavy items in a smaller box. This helps to avoid any box from becoming too heavy and keeps a uniformity to the weight of the boxes.

* For breakable or fragile items, wrap them first in a plastic bag and then re-wrap them in bubble wrap. This will add an extra degree of padding to help protect glass items. Also, be sure not to pack fragile items with non-fragile items.

* Whenever possible, pack any household electronics and computers in the boxes they came in.

This is the best way to be sure these items are packaged properly. If you don't have the original boxes, use styrofoam or blankets and make sure the item is wrapped very securely to prevent damage.

* If you are packing an item that may stain another item, be sure to move it separately. For example, a greasy bicycle chain or car parts should be packaged or covered and kept away from easily stained or damaged material like sofa's or mattresses.

* Mark the contents of each packed box by room. That way, when it is time to unload, each box can be placed in the corresponding room to make the unpacking process easier.

* If you want to be super organized, tape a written list of the box contents on the top of each box so when you are unpacking, you will know what is in each box. This way you can unpack the most important boxes first and leave less important boxes for later.

* Clearly mark fragile boxes. This is especially important when working with a moving company. They are unaware of what types of items you have packed so clearly stating which boxes are fragile or breakable, will ensure that they are handled with extra care.

* Use extra wide packing tape to seal all of your boxes. Tape at least 2 strips of tape over each joining box flap for added strength.

* When loading your moving truck or vehicle, remember to pack larger, heavy boxes on the bottom and lighter fragile boxes on the top. Make sure the boxes are secure and will not fall over during transit.

These are simple but important things to remember if you want your move to go smoothly. Packing can make a big difference in how effective and efficient your move will be.
